Course Overview:

This is a closed session for the organization who curated the training event. Please head back to our course schedule page to explore our open sessions.

In today’s fast-paced environment, defined by social media, constant visibility, and declining trust in institutions, the way leaders communicate can quickly influence public perception and organizational credibility. This two-day training combines media relations and public speaking into a comprehensive communications course designed specifically for public safety professionals and government leaders.

Participants will learn how to shape public understanding, manage high-stakes interactions, and deliver clear, confident messages in front of cameras, reporters, and live audiences alike.

This course helps participants understand what to say and, more importantly, how to say it. Through real-world examples, interactive instruction, and live practice, participants gain proven tools to reduce risk, avoid common communication pitfalls, and build trust within the communities they serve.

Training Topics Include:

  • Preparing for media interviews and public presentations
  • Forming strong soundbites and key messages
  • Messaging and bridging to stay on message under pressure
  • Responding to difficult, emotional, or unexpected questions
  • Strengthening partnerships with news organizations
  • Body language, optics, and nonverbal communication
  • Controlling the environment while maintaining safety
  • Overcoming nerves and speaking with confidence

Participants will have the opportunity to practice in a low-risk, supportive environment and receive guidance from instructor Angela Ingram, an experienced communications professional who understands the realities of public safety leadership.

Angela has over 20 years of experience as a broadcast journalist and is now a senior communications strategist at Julie Parker Communications. Her previous roles have included communications coordinator for the Forest Hills School District in Ohio and communications director for the Louisville Metro Police Department in Kentucky. She led crisis communications for significant events, including the COVID-19 pandemic, a high-profile school board election, a mass shooting at a major city bank, and the arrest of a world-renowned golfer. Additionally, Angela trains public safety and government officials in crisis response, media, and social media strategies. She's also a creative digital content creator.
