PIO Fundamentals Milpitas

Course Overview:

This is a closed session for the organization who curated the training event. Please head back to our course schedule page to explore our open sessions.

Are you tasked with being the face of your organization’s public message but unsure if you have all the right tools?

This engaging, two-day training is designed for public information officers and leaders who oversee public messaging and want a clearer, more strategic approach. Through interactive discussion, real-world case studies, and hands-on exercises, we’ll help you sharpen how you communicate, whether you’re sharing good news, correcting misinformation, or managing a high-stakes crisis.

From social media updates to news conferences, you’ll learn how to deliver clear, credible messages across the full spectrum of public communication. The course blends proven communication principles with practical application in a low-pressure, adult-learning environment.

You’ll leave with more confidence, stronger skills, and a strategic roadmap you can use immediately.

Training topics include:

  • Uncovering Good News Stories That Resonate
  • Run It Like a Newsroom: A PIO Strategy
  • Messaging in Real Time through Social Media (With Case Study)
  • Media Relations From News Releases to News Conferences
  • On-Camera: Mock News Conference Practical Exercise
  • Legal Considerations for Government PIOs

The course capstone, mock news conferences, allows you to practice handling the tough questions under the stress of the lights in a safe, risk-free environment, with valuable feedback provided by an experienced communicator.

Effective public communication has never been more complex or more important. Obtain time-tested tools to communicate through the good news and the inevitable critical incidents from a sought-after instructor, Angela Ingram.

Angela brings over 20 years of experience as a broadcast journalist to her senior communications strategist position at Julie Parker Communications. Her previous roles include communications coordinator for the Forest Hills School District in Ohio and communications director for the Louisville Metro Police Department in Kentucky. She led crisis communications for significant events, including the COVID-19 pandemic, a high-profile school board election, a mass shooting at a major city bank, and the arrest of a world-renowned golfer. Additionally, Angela trains public safety and government officials in crisis response, media, and social media strategies. She's also a creative digital content creator.
