Campus Crisis Communications

Strong communication is critical for keeping your campus safe and your community informed. Even the best plans can fall short if your leadership and public safety team are not trained to act under pressure.

This engaging, fast-paced two-day course prepares university and campus public safety supervisors, PIOs, and communications staff for messaging during campus crises, whether it is a critical incident, controversy, or high-profile event. You will gain the skills to deliver clear and effective public messaging when it matters most.

Topics include:

  • Crafting real-time messaging for campus emergencies and social media with a higher education case study
  • Writing clear and effective news releases tailored to university communities
  • Managing misinformation online and in student, local, and national media
  • Navigating the unique landscape of campus media relations and internal communications
  • Practical exercises to apply the training in realistic campus scenarios
  • Mock news conference simulations focused on issues facing higher education

Effective public communication in a university setting is increasingly complex and critical. Gain time-tested strategies and tools to communicate during campus incidents from threats to controversies with guidance from an experienced crisis communications instructor.

Instructor: Christopher Mannino, retired chief of police from the Chicago area, is an FBI National Academy graduate and National Policing Institute Executive Fellow. He led his agency through multiple crises and critical incidents and now serves as vice president of Julie Parker Communications, recognized internationally as a crisis communications expert.
