Media relations is no longer just about answering questions. It is about shaping public understanding in a fast-paced environment defined by social media, constant scrutiny, and declining trust in institutions. How leaders and spokespersons interact with the media can quickly influence public perception and organizational credibility.

This one-day media relations course prepares public safety professionals and government leaders to engage the media with confidence during both routine operations and high-pressure situations. Participants learn how to prepare for interviews, respond strategically to media inquiries, and deliver clear, coordinated messages that reduce risk and build trust.

Through practical instruction and real-world examples, students gain the tools to avoid common interview pitfalls and communicate effectively when it matters most.

Topics include:

  • Forming strong soundbites and effective interview preparation
  • Responding to difficult and unexpected media questions
  • What to do when the media calls and how to respond strategically
  • Avoiding common interview traps that can damage credibility
  • The importance of bridging to stay on message
  • Coordinating messaging across leadership and the organization

In today’s fast-moving media environment, a single interview can shape public perception. This course shares proven strategies, practical tools, and hands-on guidance from an experienced media relations instructor, Nelly Miles. Participants will be prepared to engage the media with confidence and control.

Instructor Nelly Miles brings over 25 years of experience in public safety and crisis communications, including her leadership as Public & Governmental Affairs Director for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. A former forensic scientist turned award-winning strategic communicator, she now oversees operations and strategy at JPC. Nelly has trained leaders nationwide and serves as PR Chair for the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, as well as an active member of IACP.

Training certificates will be sent upon completion.
